It wasn’t too long ago that I was experiencing headaches nearly every single day. My first encounters with head pain began in university. 

During my time there, I was on the freshman diet of eating pizza and mac and cheese every week. On top of that, I found myself moving into my university apartment with a carry-on suitcase full of cake mixes and icing so I could bake cakes to deal with the insane amount of stress that exploded into my life from challenging assignments and exams so that I could do well in my courses and graduate. 

Because of this I developed debilitating migraines and started taking acetaminophen with codeine and caffeine while continuing on my freshman diet. However this drug cocktail was making my head so loopy that I would have to lay down for hours. Not only did I not like how it made me feel, it forced me to lose productive work hours.  

Once out of university, all that work and endless deadlines disappeared and surprisingly my migraines did too. This was interesting to me because I fully believed that my migraines were not driven by stress but my body proved otherwise when they disappeared with the end of university.  

As happy as I was that my migraines disappeared, they were unfortunately replaced with 3-5 headaches every week. 

Because my migraines downgraded to headaches, I switched to extra-strength liquid ibuprofen. This helped me avoid feeling the way I did on the acetaminophen cocktail and made me feel better about not taking a drug that was stronger than necessary. 

Over time, as I learned more about health and nutrition, I began experimenting with my diet by including more fruits and vegetables and reducing my refined sugar intake. I was also able to get off of painkillers. This brought my headaches down to about 1 per week.  

Yet one Christmas a couple of years ago, I went on a bit of a holiday food-filled bender that was rich in carbs and sugar as well as overeating in general. I’m sure you’ve been here before too.
