I love birthdays and I love summer so thank goodness my birthday is in summer! Maybe that’s why I love summer so much? Or maybe it’s why I love birthdays? As much as I respect the seasons (hello Reset to Real Food), I think I’ve had my fill of winter. I’m creating a life that supports living somewhere warm during the winter and not having to wait until retirement to do so.

In light of my birthday this weekend, I thought I’d share a bit about me so you know more about the person behind this blog who is always telling you to eat green smoothies and hemp hearts. I do so with love!

  • I love watching thrillers and am always looking for one that I haven’t seen.  
  • You already know that I love summer but my favourite summer activities are a great game of tennis and a long afternoon of SUP.
  • I get a lot of anxiety when I see people walking with the shoelaces untied.
  • I love going to concerts. The last one I went to was Sia.
  • I have a horrible memory so I can’t remember if I’ve told you any of these before.
  • I regularly listen to movie scores when I am creating content for you.

I have this theory that your birthday should be a stat holiday, they are THAT important. We don’t celebrate ourselves or our loved ones enough and birthdays are the perfect time to do that. We put off doing new things we want to do or try until tomorrow and somehow the tomorrow where we do that thing never comes.

Birthdays are a perfect time for reflection as well. Since I turn 30 this year, the reflection is running deeper. In many regards, there are several things I wanted to have ticked off my life list that just haven’t happened yet. I constantly remind myself to trust that things unfold in their own time and not my time, but sometimes it is hard to find this trust.

What’s magical though is that I have checked things off that list that I never even thought would be added, largely starting my own online business. I NEVER in a million years thought I would do this. I have a clear memory of my food science teacher asking the group, while waiting in lab, so what business do you plan on starting? Many did not even flicker before providing their response. I was the odd person out who scoffed at the question, replying none. I would never start my own business. I have no intention of becoming an entrepreneur.

Five years later I am writing a post on my personal website. I now never say never and that instance may have been the last time I used that word. There are so many hats to wear when building something from nothing – marketer, designer, copywriter, sales, tech guru, public speaker and social media. In all honesty sometimes I just want to be a nutritionist! But all these hats push me outside of my comfort zone (just like I ask you to do) and I have experienced more personal growth than I ever would have without becoming an entrepreneur. For that I am so thankful.

In my books, birthdays are best summed up by reflection and celebration. Yes, reflection brings up some muck but it also brings up a lot of light, if you allow it. If you reflect on how you ate this year and beat yourself up for all the things you didn’t achieve, you won’t feel good about yourself. You likely won’t make any lasting changes to your diet, leaving you stuck feeling crappy. Instead, look for what you have accomplished, no matter how small and even on the days you feel like you weren’t doing “good.”

It’s easiest to think of celebration, living life and self care on a day about YOU. Sometimes this is about occasional indulgence and new adventure, but sometimes it is about prioritizing yourself and deciding to buy different food at the grocery store or prep your veggies or batch cook on Sundays. How can you apply this celebration of yourself to the rest of your days?

  1. 1 cup water
  2. ½ cup coconut milk
  3. 1 tbsp coconut oil
  4. 2 handfuls spinach
  5. 1 medjool date
  6. 3 tbsp hemp hearts
  7. 2 tbsp coconut flour
  8. 2 tsp pure vanilla extract or 1 tsp vanilla bean powder
  9. 1/4 tsp almond extract
  10. Optional: sprinkles with natural colours
